The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down power supply from the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The two power utilities said the precautionary measure was necessary to safeguard lives, protect critical electricity infrastructure and prevent damage to the transmission and distribution network.
A joint statement issued by GRIDCo and ECG on Monday said the flooding had affected vital power infrastructure at several substations, creating significant safety risks for both electrical equipment and operational personnel.
“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the statement said.
The companies explained that the temporary outage would remain in place until conditions become safe for restoration works.
They noted that engineers were continuously monitoring the situation and carrying out detailed assessments to determine the extent of the damage caused by the flooding to the electricity network.
GRIDCo and ECG cautioned that as the heavy rains and flooding persist, additional power supply interruptions could occur in other affected areas if safety concerns arise.
They stressed that any such outages would be undertaken solely as precautionary measures to protect lives, property and critical electricity infrastructure.
The utilities appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any electricity-related hazards, including fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines and flooded electrical installations.
According to the statement, prompt reporting of such incidents to the nearest ECG office or through the company’s customer service channels would support rapid emergency response and help prevent accidents.
GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruptions and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation.
They assured customers that every effort would be made to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible once weather conditions improve and engineers determine that it is safe to re-energise the affected substations.
The companies reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of the public while maintaining the reliability of Ghana’s electricity transmission and distribution systems during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
