The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a sharp split in share price performance in August, with some listed companies posting extraordinary gains while others suffered significant declines, despite the broader equity market maintaining its strong year-to-date performance.
The sharp movements reflected changing buying and selling activity around individual stocks during the month. As investors increased their demand for some shares, their prices climbed, while selling pressure on other counters pushed their prices lower. The result was a wide gap between the market’s biggest price gainers and losers in August.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin PLC emerged as the biggest price gainer for the month, with its share price surging 313.6%. Digicut Production & Advertising PLC followed with a 211.1% increase, while Hords PLC recorded a 125.6% rise.
The strong gains extended across several other counters, although at a much more moderate pace. Unilever Ghana PLC gained 35.6%, Clydestone (Ghana) PLC rose 25.9%, while Cocoa Processing Co. PLC increased by 17.6%.
Meridian Marshalls Holding Company and ZEN Petroleum Holdings PLC also recorded gains of 9.1% and 8.9%, respectively. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC added 3.9%, while Ecobank Ghana PLC recorded a marginal 0.1% increase.
The gains, however, were sharply contrasted by declines across several stocks.
Enterprise Group PLC recorded the steepest fall in August, with its share price dropping 33.1%. Atlantic Lithium Ltd. followed with a 15.2% decline, while Societe Generale Ghana PLC and Cal Bank PLC fell 12.1% and 11.4%, respectively.
Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC also declined by 10.2%, followed by Intravenous Infusions PLC at 9.5% and GCB Bank PLC at 8.4%.
Other notable declines came from Ghana Oil Company PLC, which fell 6.4%, SIC Insurance Company PLC, down 4.7%, and Benso Palm Plantation PLC, which declined 4.2%. Ecobank Transnational Inc., Access Bank Ghana PLC and Kasapreko PLC each recorded declines of between 3.0% and 3.6%.
The contrasting performances came against a backdrop of increased activity on the equity market. The GSE recorded 133,867 transactions in August, representing a 323.86% increase compared with the same period last year.
Total equity volume traded during the month reached 50.99 million shares, up 11.10% year-on-year, while the value of shares traded rose 3.48% to GH¢210.73 million.
Despite the mixed individual stock performances, the broader market remained firmly positive on a year-to-date basis. The GSE Composite Index had gained 71.90% by the end of August, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index was up 70.09%.
The divergence in individual share prices therefore points to a market where the headline index gains do not tell the full story of what investors experienced across individual stocks.
While some counters delivered triple-digit returns during the month, others recorded double-digit losses, creating a wide gap between the market’s biggest winners and losers.
