The final week of February on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) was anything but quiet. It was a week of mixed performances, with some stocks making steady gains, others facing sharp losses, and one of Ghana’s most significant commodities, gold, suffering an unexpected dip.
One of the biggest winners of the week was Total Petroleum (TOTAL), which surged by GH₵1.36 to close at GH₵14.98. This strong rally reflected renewed investor confidence in the company’s prospects.
SIC Insurance (SIC) also had a good run, recording a GH₵0.03 gain from GH₵0.34 to GH₵0.37, showing resilience in a volatile market. Meanwhile, MTN Ghana (MTNGH) posted small but steady growth, moving from GH₵2.89 to GH₵2.91, gaining GH₵0.02 over two trading sessions.

However, the biggest surprise of the week came from NewGold (GLD), which suffered a sharp and unexpected drop. The stock, which started the week at GH₵439.53, tumbled to GH₵425.50 by Friday, a GH₵14.03 decline.
The steepest single-day drop occurred on February 27, when GLD plunged by GH₵10.22, causing concern among investors. This decline was unusual for a commodity-backed stock, raising questions about the underlying factors driving the sell-off.
Beyond individual stocks, the broader market told a story of fluctuating investor sentiment. Trading activity peaked midweek, with February 26 recording over 11.6 million shares traded, but by Friday, volumes had fallen sharply to 462,213 shares.
Despite these shifts, the GSE Composite Index managed to close at 5,659.76, reflecting a 41.3-point increase over the week. The Financial Stock Index also held its ground at 2,814.30, reinforcing the strength of financial stocks amid the week’s volatility.
