Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) from Monday, January 19 to Friday, January 23, 2026, showed renewed activity, with investors increasingly engaging in both blue-chip (well established companies) and financial stocks as the market edged higher.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) closed at 8,976.64 points on Friday, a modest gain of 6.83 points from the previous day, while market capitalization grew to GH¢178.53 billion.
The week began with a flurry of trading on Monday, January 19, when 12.8 million shares changed hands, valued at over GH¢53.3 million. This early surge set the tone for the week, reflecting investor interest in high-performing counters amid a generally positive market sentiment.

However, activity slowed considerably midweek. Wednesday, January 21, recorded just 1.14 million shares traded, worth GH¢4.56 million, though the index climbed to 8,925.23 points, suggesting selective buying rather than broad market participation.
Trading regained momentum towards the end of the week. Thursday saw 8.09 million shares, valued at GH¢33.65 million, exchange hands, while Friday closed with nearly 8.77 million shares traded for GH¢50.9 million. The late-week pickup helped the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) rise by 9.03 points, ending at 4,892.35, continuing its year-to-date growth of 5.28%.

Year-to-date, the broader market has gained 2.35%, reflecting steady investor confidence in the early weeks of 2028. Last week’s gains can largely be attributed to a combination of renewed retail and institutional interest, particularly in financial and blue-chip stocks, as well as positive sentiment around corporate earnings and macroeconomic stability.
Investors appeared to be reacting to both market fundamentals and broader economic optimism, with trading volumes spiking when confidence in key counters rose. While midweek activity was quieter, the strong finish to the week indicated a market still capable of resilience, even as participants took a measured approach amid broader global uncertainties.
