Ghana’s appetite for Chinese imports keeps growing, with goods from China surging by 67.6% in 2024. Imports jumped from GH₵33.9 billion in 2023 to GH₵56.8 billion in 2024, making China Ghana’s biggest trading partner by far.

China remains Ghana’s leading source for several key product categories. Iron and steel topped the list, making up 65.2% of Ghana’s total imports in this category.

Machinery and electrical equipment followed at 44.0%, plastics at 33.4%, chemical products at 26.9%, vehicles and automotive parts at 25.5%, and other consumer products at 22.1%. The demand for these goods highlights the country’s reliance on China for both industrial and consumer needs.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s list of top import partners has changed. The United Arab Emirates (GH₵21.9 billion) and the United Kingdom (GH₵19.0 billion) replaced the Netherlands and Russia in the top five, with most imports from these countries being mineral fuels and oils.

With China maintaining a stronghold in Ghana’s imports, the trade relationship between the two nations continues to deepen, shaping the country’s economic and industrial landscape.
