Ghana has been selected to host the prestigious 2025 World Scrabble Championship, winning the bid over Thailand. This marks the first time Ghana will host the event and the second time it will be held in West Africa.
The championship is scheduled to take place from November 7 to 16, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. It will feature two major events: the World Team Scrabble Championship (WTSC) and the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC).
The WTSC will gather teams of five players each from 16 countries, including the United States and Canada, competing for national pride. The WESPAC championship will see over 600 participants from 30 countries, creating a global celebration of Scrabble talent.
Captain Haruna Adamu, President of the Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG), expressed his excitement during a media briefing. “We are thrilled to bring the world of Scrabble to Ghana, and we’re committed to making it a memorable experience for all participants,” he stated. He also highlighted Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, emphasizing that these would enhance the overall experience for attendees.

Captain Adamu also underscored the economic benefits the event would bring, explaining that tourism and infrastructure development will receive a significant boost. “We expect an influx of visitors, which will stimulate local businesses and create opportunities for economic growth,” he added.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority, SCAG has begun working with stakeholders to ensure the success of the event. Additionally, the association has planned side events, including a Last Chance Qualifier on November 11, which will be governed by internationally recognized rules and a ratings system to determine winners.
Ghana’s hosting of the 2025 World Scrabble Championship promises to be an exciting occasion, celebrating both the world of Scrabble and the nation’s hospitality.
