Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange increased during the week ended October 9, 2026, driven largely by MTN Ghana, even as the broader market recorded slight declines. The value and volume of shares traded rose significantly, but the main market indices edged lower, while the exchange maintained strong gains for the year.
The total value of shares traded rose by 35.6% to GH¢141.88 million from GH¢104.63 million in the previous week, according to the exchange’s weekly trading summary.
The volume of shares traded also increased by 31.8% to 24.81 million shares, up from 18.83 million shares a week earlier.
Despite the increase in trading activity, the GSE Composite Index, which tracks the performance of listed shares, fell by 0.13% to 14,053.48 points.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index also declined by 0.50% to 7,416.25 points, while the total market value of listed companies slipped by 0.08% from GH¢266.70 billion to GH¢266.50 billion.

MTN Ghana dominates trading
MTN Ghana accounted for most of the trading activity during the week, with 20.40 million shares changing hands, representing about 82.3% of the total volume traded.
The shares were valued at GH¢129.81 million, accounting for approximately 91.5% of the total value traded on the exchange.
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector recorded the highest trading value at GH¢129.92 million, far ahead of the financial sector, which recorded GH¢4.94 million.
Trading was particularly active on Wednesday, October 7, when 13.38 million shares worth GH¢81.25 million were traded. This accounted for about 53.9% of the week’s total trading volume.
The figures show that trading activity was heavily concentrated in MTN Ghana during the period, with the company accounting for most of the value traded.

HORDS, IIL and SIC lead weekly gainers
HORDS recorded the biggest percentage gain among the stocks listed in the exchange’s weekly market movers report, rising by 13.89% from GH¢0.72 to GH¢0.82.
Intravenous Infusions Limited (IIL) followed with a 12.24% increase, moving from GH¢0.49 to GH¢0.55, while SIC Insurance Company gained 10.56% to close at GH¢5.13.
Other notable gainers included DIGICUT, which rose by 9.80% to GH¢0.56, and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, which gained 9.00% to close at GH¢38.50.
GOIL also rose by 6.01% to GH¢6.00, while Enterprise Group gained 4.76% to close at GH¢7.70.
On the losing side, DAS Pharma recorded the largest decline, falling by 8.93% from GH¢1.12 to GH¢1.02. Fan Milk fell by 4.76% to GH¢8.00, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated declined by 3.75% to GH¢1.54.
Unilever Ghana also lost 1.25% to close at GH¢39.50, while MTN Ghana’s share price fell by 0.77% to GH¢6.45.
The mixed performance of individual stocks shows that gains in some companies did not prevent the broader market indices from ending the week lower.
Market remains strong for the year
Despite the slight weekly declines, the exchange remained significantly higher than at the beginning of 2026.
The GSE Composite Index had gained 60.24% year to date, while the Financial Stocks Index was up 59.59%.
The total market capitalisation of listed companies had also increased by 54.90% over the same period.
