Ghana and Japan have signed a $20 million grant agreement to upgrade selected hospitals in Ghana’s Northern Region, strengthening bilateral cooperation in social infrastructure and public health delivery.
The exchange of notes was formalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, marking a further expansion of development ties between the two countries.
The funding will support improvements in medical infrastructure and equipment, with the objective of expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare services in the region.

The minister said strengthening healthcare delivery remains a central priority under the Mahama administration, with regional health investments designed to address disparities in service provision.
Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to sustained diplomatic and development cooperation. Japan continues to play a strategic role in supporting Ghana’s infrastructure and human capital agenda, building on longstanding collaboration in health, education and technical capacity development.
