As Ghana cements its reputation as a top West African travel hub, the Ghana Hotels Association says the country’s hospitality industry is fully prepared to accommodate a sharp rise in international arrivals, even if the number of hotel guests were to double this year.

According to the Ghana Tourism Authority’s 2024 report, international arrivals surged to 1.29 million, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. The figures reflect Ghana’s rising appeal among global travelers, fueled by cultural tourism, events, and business conferences.

Speaking to the media, President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Dr. Edward Nyamike, confidently affirmed the sector’s readiness.

“We have the capacity to accommodate that number and even more,” Dr. Nyamike said.

He explained that while Ghana’s current hotel infrastructure can manage growing demand, the industry remains open to strategic investments to further expand capacity and enhance competitiveness, particularly during peak tourism seasons.

“Although increasing the number of rooms and beds is part of our long-term strategy, it is not solely in response to this current trend,” he emphasised.

Dr. Nyamike underscored that maintaining quality standards remains paramount as the industry scales up to host larger visitor numbers.

“During peak periods, we must consider expansion and ensure we maintain quality standards across the board. The beds are available, and we could even host double the current figures. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to invest in additional capacity,” he noted.

Strategic Outlook

The Association’s positive outlook aligns with government ambitions to deepen tourism’s contribution to GDP, job creation, and regional economic integration. Analysts say sustained investments in room stock, staff training, and service innovation will be crucial to maintaining Ghana’s competitive edge in Africa’s tourism market.
