Ghana and Canada are considering a Memorandum of Understanding on labour mobility as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address irregular migration, following a meeting between Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson and Canada’s Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar.
Quayson lauded the longstanding cordial relations between the two countries and stressed the need to provide legal pathways for migration to avert the risks associated with irregular movement. Highlighting the skill set of Ghana’s youth, he said a labour mobility framework could deliver mutual benefits while easing migration pressures.

The Deputy Minister also assured of Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Canada to ensure smooth immigration processes for Ghanaian nationals traveling to Canada for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Dr. Kochhar acknowledged Canada’s concerns over irregular migration but reaffirmed Ottawa’s commitment to a “smooth and well‑coordinated immigration process” for the tournament, in close cooperation with Ghana. He further expressed Canada’s openness to deepening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
The talks presents Ghana an opportunity to leverage its youthful workforce for overseas opportunities while reinforcing safe and orderly migration practices.
