Every year, thousands of young people leave university and enter a difficult question: What next?
For some, it will be a job search. For others, entrepreneurship may offer another path.
But starting a business is not simply about having an idea.
There is a journey between saying “I have an idea” and building a business that has customers, generates revenue, attracts capital and creates jobs.
And that journey is not limited to young entrepreneurs.
Across Ghana, many businesses are already operating but remain stuck at a certain stage. They have customers and sales, but struggle with financing, systems, structure, management or the next step for growth.
So what actually helps a business move forward?
It could begin with understanding the customer and testing the idea. It could mean putting proper records and systems in place. It could require formalising the business, improving its financial position or finding the right kind of capital.
And capital itself is not one-size-fits-all.
A new business may rely on savings, family support or grants. A growing business may need working capital, asset finance or an investor. An established company looking to expand may require larger forms of institutional capital.
The real question is not simply “Where can I get money?”
It is “What does my business need at this stage, and what do I need to do to get there?”
That is the conversation The High Street Journal wants to explore through From Survival to Scale.
Over the coming months, we will speak with entrepreneurs, investors, financiers and business experts about the decisions, challenges and opportunities that shape the journey from idea to sustainable enterprise.
We will start with a simple question:
How do you know if an idea is actually worth building?
And if you have an experience, idea, opportunity or solution that can help young people, individuals and businesses build, finance and grow sustainable enterprises, we want you to be part of the conversation.
