In a welcome relief for many Ghanaians, the prices of key food items such as tomatoes, okro, and garden eggs have dropped significantly, contributing to a marginal decline in the country’s inflation rate for August 2024.
According to the latest report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), while overall inflation fell to 20.4% from 20.9% in July 2024, certain food items experienced notable price reductions, offering much-needed relief to households.
Tomatoes saw a 5.3% decrease in price, garden eggs recorded a 3.2% drop, and okro experienced the largest reduction at 6.0%. These declines stand out against the broader trend of rising prices for most food products, helping to alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by consumers.
The overall inflation slowdown in August was largely driven by a drop in food inflation, which fell from 21.5% in July to 19.1% in August. While food prices remain elevated, the drop in these key staple items has contributed to easing inflationary pressures across the sector.

The broader fall in inflation offers a glimmer of hope for Ghanaians, many of whom are struggling with the high cost of living. However, despite the decrease in food prices, non-food sectors like housing, water, and utilities continue to see rising costs, keeping overall inflation higher than desired.
The reduction in food prices, particularly for staples like tomatoes, garden eggs, and okro, signals a positive trend for consumers.
While challenges remain in managing inflation across other sectors, this development provides some respite for Ghanaians looking for relief from rising living costs.
