The Ghana Airports Company Limited, in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, will launch a pilot programme connecting London Gatwick Airport to Kumasi’s Prempeh I International Airport, in the Ashanti region, starting December 3, 2024.
This marks the first time travellers can fly directly from London to Kumasi’s airport. This exciting development, confirmed during an interview with The High Street Journal, signals a major milestone for air travel in Ghana.
A representative from Ethiopian Airlines revealed that the initiative is a test run to gauge demand, with plans to expand if it proves successful.
“This is a pilot we are doing. We are testing the market, and from there, we’ll pick up the pace,” the representative shared, adding that the public has a unique opportunity to take advantage of the service during this trial phase.
The flights are designed to be convenient, departing London Gatwick at 2:10 am and arriving in Kumasi at 9:05 am. Even better, ticket prices will remain at the standard fare, making the route accessible for both business and leisure travellers. “The cost is not affected; it remains a normal fare,” the representative confirmed.
The representative also encouraged potential travellers to use the service, indicating that strong demand during the pilot phase could lead to its long-term continuation. “You can take advantage of it if you’re interested,” they urged, emphasizing that passenger response will be a key factor in determining the route’s future.
This service is a game-changer for the people in the Region. For years, travellers to the Ashanti Region had to endure layovers in Accra or other cities, adding hours to their journey. Now, with this direct route, passengers can save time and enjoy a smoother travel experience.
The collaboration between Ghana Airports Company and Ethiopian Airlines comes as part of a broader effort to boost Kumasi’s profile as an international travel hub. For the Ashanti Region, this is a chance to attract more business, tourism, and investment.
