ExxonMobil has been named Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Leader of the Year at the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference, recognizing the company’s impact on education, innovation, and sustainable growth across the continent.
The award honors ExxonMobil’s STEM Africa program, launched in 2024 by the ExxonMobil Foundation in partnership with Junior Achievement Africa, which has already reached more than 3,000 students and educators in Nigeria, Namibia, Angola, and Mozambique. The initiative focuses on building science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills, inspiring young Africans to pursue technical careers critical to the continent’s energy and technology sectors.
According to ExxonMobil, 96% of students who participated in the program expressed interest in STEM-related professions, showing its strong influence in shaping Africa’s next generation of innovators. The initiative also includes teacher training programs that strengthen local education systems and promote long-term knowledge transfer.
Beyond education, ExxonMobil continues to expand its operations responsibly, advancing deepwater oil projects in Nigeria and Angola, while leading frontier exploration in Namibia’s Walvis Basin. In Mozambique, the company is developing the Rovuma LNG project, designed with carbon-reduction technology and programs to train local engineers.
“ExxonMobil’s impact extends far beyond production volumes; it’s about empowering people and communities,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. “Through the STEM Africa program, the company is building a skilled workforce that will drive Africa’s future energy development.”
The company’s ESG strategy integrates community development, innovation, and environmental responsibility, positioning ExxonMobil as a leader in responsible corporate citizenship in Africa.
