The trial involving former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority, Gifty Oware-Mensah, continued on Tuesday with the testimony of the third prosecution witness, Mr. Eric Nyarko, a former Head of Accounts at the Authority.
Mr. Nyarko, who served in that role from May 2017 to March 2024, was led in evidence-in-chief by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa. During the proceedings, the court adopted his witness statements and admitted ten exhibits tendered by the prosecution. The exhibits comprise email attachments and documents said to detail transactions allegedly initiated on the instructions of the accused.
Under cross-examination by counsel for the accused, Mr. Gary Nimako Marfo, the witness told the court that, acting on instructions from Mrs. Oware-Mensah in her capacity as Deputy Director of Finance and Administration, he forwarded data to the Authority’s e-zwich accountant to establish a standing order for monthly payments of GH¢1,911,257.09.
According to the witness, the arrangement ran for eleven months, resulting in cumulative payments amounting to GH¢21,023,827.88.
The defence is expected to continue its cross-examination of the witness when the matter resumes before the court on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
Proceedings are likely to focus further on the circumstances surrounding the establishment and execution of the payment arrangement, which forms part of the prosecution’s case against the former National Service official.
