Afreximbank is seeking to turn Angola’s energy potential into a larger pipeline of bankable projects, combining project preparation, advisory and financing tools to attract capital and increase local participation in the industry.
Haytham El Maayergi, Executive Vice President, Global Trade Bank at Afreximbank, said Angola’s challenge is no longer a lack of investment opportunities but converting those opportunities into transactions that can attract financing.
According to him, “Angola does not lack opportunities. The challenge is turning more of those opportunities into bankable transactions and bringing the right capital behind them.”
Speaking at the Angola Oil & Gas Conference 2026, El Maayergi said the bank’s support begins before projects reach the financing stage, using advisory services and project preparation to develop opportunities into financeable investments.
Afreximbank combines structured and trade finance, guarantees, syndication and capital mobilisation to support projects from early development through financing and expansion, according to El Maayergi.
The approach is also intended to increase the share of value retained in Angola by helping local companies move beyond service provision into asset ownership, operatorship and broader participation across the energy value chain.
Afreximbank is applying the model through transactions involving Sonangol, Etu Energias, the Cabinda Refinery and Amufert, the bank said.
For Angola, greater access to project finance could help accelerate investment across the energy value chain while creating opportunities for domestic companies to capture more of the economic value generated by the sector.
The next phase, El Maayergi said, will focus on translating Angola’s energy resources into more financeable projects, stronger indigenous companies and greater domestic value retention.
