Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has dismissed reports suggesting a nationwide power outage will occur on Sunday, July 13, calling the claims are inaccurate and misleading.
The clarification follows public concern after Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor announced possible temporary power supply interruptions on that day due to scheduled maintenance by ENI. The Italian energy company is set to shut down parts of its operations to carry out maintenance work and increase gas production by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), raising total output to 270 MMscfd.
Despite the expected disruptions, the Ministry stressed that the situation does not amount to a nationwide blackout or a return to widespread power cuts, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
“I have seen some misreporting from some media houses that there will be a nationwide blackout. That is not what the Minister said. That is inaccurate; that is falsehood,” said Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry.
“He [Energy Minister] said that because of that, there is a possibility that we may have interruptions in power supply, and the Ministry has put in place measures to ensure that we don’t have any nationwide dumsor or any dumsor as people are speculating,” Rockson added.
The Ministry reiterated that the scheduled maintenance is part of broader efforts to enhance energy supply reliability and that measures are in place to minimize the impact on consumers.
