Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced plans to introduce electric buses to transform Ghana’s public transportation sector, promising a notable reduction in costs.
Speaking during his campaign tour at Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia revealed that the initiative aims to decrease transportation expenses by 40%.
This move, he says lines up with the government’s efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
The pilot phase of the project will commence in the Greater Accra region, with an initial fleet of 100 electric buses expected by the end of the year.

He says this phased approach will enable the government to assess the effectiveness of the program before expanding it to other regions. The strategic rollout is expected to minimize logistical challenges and ensure a flawless transition to the new transportation system.
The announcement was made during a gathering of influential community leaders, including imams, chiefs, and queen mothers, emphasizing the government’s commitment to engaging with key stakeholders.
Some industry experts have praised the initiative, citing the possibility of notable cost savings and environmental benefits. Electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment.
