Developers across Africa are participating in a competition to create a payment application using the tbDEX SDK. Teams of up to two people will develop wallet applications to be tested with example Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs). Six finalist teams will be flown to Nairobi to present their projects, with prizes for the top three winners: $15,000 in BTC for first place, $10,000 in BTC for second, and $5,000 in BTC for third.
Block’s TBD launched the competition, dubbed the TBD Hackathon, in partnership with the Africa Bitcoin Conference. The initiative aims to drive innovation in African payment systems using the tbDEX open-source protocol.
The hackathon runs from July 31, 2024, to September 15, 2024, with the final event taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 9-11, 2024, during the Africa Bitcoin Conference.
The competition aims to address payment challenges in Africa, such as limited banking access, high transaction fees, and inefficient cross-border payments, by leveraging tbDEX to connect users with wallet providers and financial institutions.
Angie Jones, Global VP of Developer Relations for TBD, encourages all developers to participate, stating that the hackathon is a great opportunity to build next-generation financial tools for Africa.
