Some members of the Ghana Mine Workers Union have converged at the premise of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra ready to demonstrate despite an earlier postponement of the exercise.
The protest was initially scheduled to begin today, Monday, and continue through Tuesday. However, the planned Jubilee House Picketing by the union has been postponed to Wednesday, 18th September 2024.
Checks by The High Street Journal have revealed that some security concerns raised by the Ghana Police Service necessitated the postponement.
Further checks revealed that the Ghana Mine Workers Union was set to officially communicate the change in plans to the public today Monday, September 16th, and also announce the modalities and the way forward.
Despite the postponement emanating from the Ghana Police Service, some mine workers who were not able to receive the news early enough have already traveled to Accra. The High Street Journal can confirm that these mine workers have gathered at the premise of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) clad in red attires already poised for action. They are already chanting and singing protest songs to register their pleasure calling on the government to act now.

The Union says it is embarking on this exercise of picketing the Jubilee House, Parliament of Ghana, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to protest against the happenings at the Future Global Resources (FGR) Bogoso-Prestea Mine.
The mine workers are demanding that the government terminate the mining lease of FGR which they believe has expired and allow other prospective investors to participate in the operations of the mine.
To hold on to the lease, the Union is also alleging that FGR has been using brute force and intimidation to coerce members of the union.
In an earlier statement to the press, General Secretary of the Union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana narrated, “The claims by FGR that the Bogoso-Prestea Mines are opened for business is factually inaccurate but a deliberate ploy to hand onto the mineral rights by any means.
“Shockingly, since the expiration of the notice and their notorious refusal to comply with the conditions contained in the Conditional Approval, the company has resorted to the use of brute force by the military, intimidating and victimizing our members.”
