The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Ghana cedi, which will be marked on July 19, 2025.
A statement issued on May 13 by the central bank highlighted the milestone as a celebration of the cedi’s role as Ghana’s sole legal tender since it replaced the Ghanaian Pound in 1965.
Describing the currency as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s economic independence, the BoG said the cedi has undergone numerous changes in form and policy to meet the evolving demands of the national economy.
“Ghana’s tenacity, innovation and quest for economic stability are all embodied in the cedi’s reforms, from the first notes and coins to the secure currency we use today,” the statement said.
To mark the anniversary, the BoG has outlined a series of nationwide events and activities to run from July to December 2025.
These will include an official launch, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder engagements aimed at deepening public understanding of the currency’s history and significance.
“This anniversary offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the history of the cedi, to celebrate the progress made, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency,” the BoG stated.
“In addition to being a medium of exchange, the cedi represents our pride, heritage, and shared aspirations for a prosperous future,” it added.
The Bank emphasized that the cedi’s journey mirrors Ghana’s resilience and ambition for a robust economy.
It also extended an open invitation to the public, institutions, stakeholders, and development partners to participate in the upcoming commemorations.
