Ghanaian sprinter and national 100-meter record holder, Benjamin Azamati, has donated GH₵10,000 to support victims of the devastating fire that destroyed properties at the Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District.
The fire, which erupted on January 1, 2025, left hundreds of traders displaced and 14 individuals seriously injured, leaving the community in anguish as they counted their losses due to the Kantamanto Market fire.
Azamati extended his generosity to provide relief for those affected by the fire. In a statement, he shared his heartfelt sentiments:
“With a heavy heart, I acknowledge the devastating fire that has ravaged our community. I stand with every individual and family affected by the Kantamanto Market fire; you are not alone.
“As an athlete, I know the value of opportunities to chase my dreams and achieve success. But I believe true greatness lies in using our blessings to uplift others. Today, I give back to those who need it most, donating this sum as a gesture of solidarity, hope, and compassion. This is my birthday wish for all the mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters affected by this disaster.”

Kantamanto Market Manager, Adutwum Atta Manu, expressed deep gratitude for the donation, describing the situation as unprecedented as a result of the Kantamanto Market fire:
“This was too devastating, and extraordinary. We want to thank God for the life of Benjamin Azamati for his sense of concern. We appreciate it and we are so grateful. It [money] will help us in a long way.”
Azamati’s act of kindness has inspired calls for other sporting personalities and public figures to step forward and offer support to the victims of the Kantamanto Market fire.
In response to the fire and a series of similar incidents, President John Dramani Mahama has issued directives to tighten security around major markets nationwide to prevent future occurrences.
The Kantamanto fire has reignited discussions on fire safety and the need for stronger disaster preparedness to protect Ghana’s vital commercial hubs.
