The Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has surrendered himself to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and has subsequently been placed under arrest as investigations into alleged financial offences involving SIC Savings and Loans continue.
EOCO, in a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, said the MP voluntarily appeared at its premises at about 10:00 a.m. to assist investigators.
The Office said his appearance followed several months of efforts to secure his attendance in connection with investigations into allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters.
According to EOCO, after the applicable investigative and operational procedures were commenced, Mr Baffour Awuah was subsequently placed under arrest.
The Office said he is currently cooperating with investigators as the process continues.
The development comes a day after the High Court issued a warrant authorising his arrest and also granted EOCO authority to search for and seize documents considered relevant to its investigation.
From attempted arrest to voluntary surrender
On September 23, EOCO officers attempted to take the MP into custody at the Accra High Court. The incident resulted in a confrontation, after which the MP sought sanctuary at Parliament.
EOCO subsequently went to the High Court seeking judicial authority to compel his attendance.
The Court, on September 30, granted the arrest warrant after EOCO told the Court that it had exhausted reasonable means of securing the MP’s voluntary attendance. The Court also authorised the agency to search for and seize documents relevant to the investigation.
The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, subsequently explained that what began at the High Court on September 23 as an invitation became an attempted arrest after an EOCO officer attempted to prevent the MP from leaving. He said the agency had already commenced the process of seeking a warrant before the Court incident.
EOCO now searches office and residence
Following his questioning at EOCO on Thursday, investigators proceeded with the next stage of the court-authorised operation.
EOCO officials accompanied Mr Baffour Awuah to his former law firm and subsequently to his residence to conduct searches and gather evidence.
The searches are being carried out under the authority granted by the High Court on September 30.
EOCO had told the Court that it was concerned relevant documents could be concealed, altered or destroyed, forming part of the basis for its request for the search and seizure order.
EOCO urges public to allow due process
In its latest statement, EOCO stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and cautioned the public against drawing premature conclusions about the MP’s culpability.
The Office said it would continue to pursue all relevant lines of inquiry, examine the available evidence and ensure that all persons involved are afforded their constitutional and legal rights.
It also assured the public that the investigation would proceed professionally, independently and in accordance with due process.
The allegations against Mr Baffour Awuah have not been established by a court.
For now, the arrest warrant that had raised the question of how EOCO would secure the attendance of a sitting MP has been executed in a different way from the confrontation witnessed at the High Court last week.
The MP has surrendered. EOCO has placed him under arrest. Investigators are now searching locations and gathering evidence as the investigation moves into its next phase.
