Water supply to large parts of eastern Accra and the Tema Metropolis was disrupted after a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline, the Ghana Water Company Limited said on Tuesday.
The rupture occurred on Monday, January 19, interrupting supply to households, businesses and public institutions across several densely populated corridors. Affected areas include Tema, Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua and Teshie, among others.
Ghana Water said engineering and technical teams were mobilised immediately after the fault was detected and have been working continuously to repair the damaged main. The company said the size of the transmission line and the complexity of the fault require careful handling to ensure the repair is safe and durable.
The outage highlights ongoing pressure on urban water infrastructure as Accra’s population expands and demand continues to rise. Transmission mains of this size are critical to moving bulk water across the city, meaning failures can disrupt supply over a wide area.
According to Ghana Water, it is prioritising support for essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools, and has asked such institutions to contact the utility directly for assistance during the disruption.
The company did not give a specific timeline for completion of the repairs, but said water supply would be restored immediately once work is finished. It said further updates would be issued as the situation develops.
