His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has called for urgent global collaboration to address the challenges facing the mining industry, emphasizing its critical role in economic development and employment.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra, he highlighted the sector’s contribution of over 12% to Ghana’s GDP and its position as the largest source of industrial employment.
The Asantehene expressed concern over the degradation of virgin lands, attributing it to corruption, political miscalculations, and regulatory failures that have complicated efforts to curb illegal mining.
He stressed the need for comprehensive tools and policies to dissect and solve these problems effectively.
Praising the Goldbod initiative, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II described it as a new horizon for the industry, noting its potential to attract more investments and yield higher returns.
He urged policymakers, industry experts, and businesses to support sustainable practices and contribute to a green economy.
Highlighting the struggles of mining companies like AngloGold Ashanti and Obuasi, he acknowledged improvements in their performance but emphasized the need for continued support and investment in the sector.
