Ghana is reinforcing its call for Africa to take full ownership of its artificial intelligence future, with Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Mohammed Adams Sukparu warning that the continent cannot afford to remain a bystander in global technological development. He delivered the keynote address on behalf of sector minister Samuel Nartey George (MP) at TechExpo Africa 2025, held at the Accra Digital Centre.
“The continent must not remain a passive consumer of AI technologies developed elsewhere,” Sukparu told participants. Speaking on the theme “The Future of AI in Africa: Who Holds the Power to Decide?” he said African governments must take intentional steps to influence how AI is created, deployed and governed.
He noted recent investments under President John Dramani Mahama, citing initiatives to expand broadband connectivity, strengthen e-governance platforms and promote digital inclusion in underserved areas. He also referenced Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which outlines a framework for ethical AI development, data protection, privacy safeguards and responsible innovation aligned with national priorities.
Sukparu said Africa’s long-term technological sovereignty will depend on sustained support for local innovators, stronger regulatory systems and deeper collaboration among government, industry, academia and development partners. He added that building homegrown AI solutions, improving algorithmic transparency and involving citizens in setting ethical boundaries are essential to the continent’s digital future.
He acknowledged the contribution of the African diaspora in advancing technology on the continent, describing TechExpo Africa as a platform that connects global expertise with local talent to develop solutions tailored to African needs.
Sukparu closed by calling for stronger regional coordination through ECOWAS and the African Union, urging stakeholders to commit to an AI future shaped by African values, equity, innovation and shared prosperity.
