Mohamed Chérif, Deputy Director General of the African Development Bank (AfDB) for Central Africa and Country Manager for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has officially assumed his duties following the presentation of credentials to the DRC government.
The ceremony took place on 20 November at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kinshasa, where Chérif presented his credentials to Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie.
Minister Kayikwamba Wagner highlighted the strong and longstanding partnership between the DRC and the AfDB, describing the Bank as “a strategic partner” for the country. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing collaboration with continental institutions and pledged support for Chérif as he begins his mandate.
Chérif emphasized the historical ties between the DRC and the Bank, noting that the country has benefited from AfDB financing since 1973. “The DRC is one of the largest countries on the continent, with immense potential. It is essential to further strengthen our cooperation to accelerate development,” he said.
He added, “When projects succeed, ordinary citizens benefit directly. Our goal remains unchanged: to support development, reduce poverty, and improve living conditions for the Congolese people.”
The African Development Bank’s active portfolio in the DRC exceeds $1.6 billion, covering key sectors including agriculture, transport, energy, drinking water and sanitation, governance, human capital, and digital development. The DRC’s portfolio is among the largest in Central Africa in terms of commitments.
