As the world moves towards a green economy, businesses are urged to explore diverse strategies for success. The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) stresses that adaptability and innovation are crucial in this pursuit.
Speaking at the official launch of the GNCCI Business Awards 2024, Chamber President Dr. Clement Osei Amoako said that the commitment to a green economy requires businesses to adapt, innovate, and collaborate with stakeholders and other enterprises to prosper. He noted that in a rapidly changing world, adaptability and innovation are indispensable.
“Today, we are at a pivotal moment where our commitment to a green economy is more crucial than ever. Our theme stresses the importance of working together to navigate these changes, driving progress while safeguarding our planet,” Dr. Amoako stated.
United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) 2011 report defined a green economy as one that improves human well-being and social equity while reducing environmental risks. It focuses on sustainable development, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity.
The term “green economy” was first introduced in a 1989 report for the UK government by environmental economists David Pearce, Anil Markandya, and Edward Barbier. It gained renewed attention in 2008 when the UNEP advocated for green stimulus packages to address financial crises and promote sustainable economic recovery. The concept was further endorsed by the UN and became a key theme at the 2012 Rio+20 conference and further on, economies have been encouraged to adopt the concept of green economy.
Prince Ackuaku, Chairman of the 4th Chamber Business Awards, said that focusing on a green economy is crucial for sustainable development and a prosperous future worldwide. He noted that this year’s theme is timely and important as businesses adapt to a rapidly changing global environment.
“As we move towards a green economy, innovation will be essential in developing sustainable practices, reducing our environmental impact, and creating new industries and job opportunities.
The 4th edition of the GNCCI Business Awards, themed “Adaptability and Innovation in a Green Economy through Collaboration,” will be held on September 27, 2024. This marks a significant event since the awards were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Clement Osei Amoako, President of GNCCI, stated that this year’s awards are a major step in recognizing and celebrating business excellence in Ghana. The awards aim to showcase the dedication, innovation, and resilience of Ghana’s business community.
“Collaboration between businesses, private sector players, government, academia, and civil society is crucial for making the necessary changes for sustainable development. Let’s embrace collaboration as a key principle in all our efforts,” Prince Ackuaku added.
