The Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Illegal Mining (Galamsey), has today October 3, begun its three-day protest against galamsey.
The protest is to fight against illegal mining and advocate for stronger action against the practice, and also demand the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters who were remanded last week.
Protesters are beginning their demonstration from the Legon Okponglo junction and will proceed to the Black Star Square, with participants following a route approved by the police.
Organized under the banners “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” the protest has gained strong momentum on social media, with thousands participating.
Mr Albert Boadu, a Convener of the Concerned Citizens Against Illegal Mining, said they will match to the Attorney General’s Office and deliver a petition demanding the release of remanded anti-galamsey protesters.
On the second day, he said demonstrators would parade the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to deliver a petition to the sector minister.
The Convener said finally on the third day, they will match to Parliament House to also petition lawmakers to amend laws to aid the fight against galamsey, while also urging young people to join the demonstration.
