Fourteen companies have been allocated land at the proposed Afienya Industrial Park ahead of the commencement of development, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, has said.
The allocations indicate early investor interest in the 1,238-acre industrial park, which is expected to accommodate businesses in manufacturing, agro-processing, textiles and apparel, pharmaceuticals, logistics, technology and renewable energy.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony to mark the start of the project, Dr Awusi said the Authority was working to establish Afienya as a modern industrial and export hub capable of attracting local and international businesses.
“I am pleased to announce that 14 companies have already been allocated land within the park, demonstrating strong investor interest even before the development has commenced,” she said.
The park is expected to provide industrial land and supporting infrastructure for companies seeking to establish or expand operations in Ghana.
According to Dr Awusi, the facility will be developed with roads, drainage, utilities, environmental management, security and fire safety incorporated into its planning.
She said the Authority was also exploring opportunities for private-sector participation in infrastructure development, including power generation and distribution, water systems, telecommunications, warehouses and factory buildings.
However, financing remains a key consideration for the project. Dr Awusi said the Authority’s internally generated funds would not be sufficient to provide all the required infrastructure and appealed to government, development partners, donor institutions and private investors for support.
The park is intended to expand Ghana’s industrial capacity and create opportunities for employment, skills development and technology transfer. The Authority also expects it to help local businesses participate in international supply chains and increase exports.
The development comes as the Authority seeks to accommodate growing demand for serviced industrial space. Dr Awusi said the Tema Export Processing Zone, the Authority’s flagship facility, was fully occupied.
As of the second quarter of 2026, the Free Zones Scheme had licensed 334 enterprises, generating 78,155 direct jobs and more than 84,000 indirect jobs, according to the CEO. Exports from the enterprises reached $3.1 billion in 2025.
