Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s largest cloud provider, experienced a widespread outage on Monday morning, affecting numerous major platforms and services, including Coinbase, Robinhood, and AI platform Perplexity.
The company reported “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region”, according to the AWS Health Dashboard, with user complaints beginning around 7:30 a.m. London time. Downdetector data showed thousands of users reporting disruptions.
Other affected services included gaming platforms Roblox and Fortnite, messaging service Slack, and smart home devices such as Ring doorbells. Coinbase and Robinhood confirmed the outage impacted their platforms, while Perplexity said it disrupted website stability.
AWS, which accounts for roughly a third of the global cloud market, underpins a significant portion of the internet, making outages of this scale capable of producing major ripple effects across financial, gaming, and consumer sectors.
A spokesperson for Amazon said the company was investigating the outage but declined further comment. Engineers were working to restore normal operations, though no full timeline for recovery has been provided.
