The second edition of the Kwahu Business Forum, held from April 19–20, 2025, at the Mpraeso Social Centre in Ghana’s Eastern Region, marked a significant milestone in the nation’s pursuit of economic revitalization. Spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama and conceptualized by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the forum has evolved into a pivotal platform for fostering entrepreneurship and bolstering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Ghana.
Themed “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector,” the forum convened a diverse assembly of stakeholders, including business owners, industrialists, investors, startups, and key players in the financial industry. The event aimed to ignite entrepreneurial growth and strengthen the capacity of Ghana’s SMEs, aligning with the government’s vision of building a more resilient and inclusive economy through SME empowerment.
Participants and exhibitors lauded the government for providing a platform that facilitated meaningful engagement between the private sector and financial institutions. Ernest Twum Barima, CEO of Adepafie Market Company Limited, praised the opportunity to showcase products and interact with government officials, noting the forum’s potential to spur market access and strategic partnerships for local businesses.
“While planning the trip, my friend and co-conspirator, the Honourable Julius Debrah, formulated the idea that as part of attending the celebrations, we should organise a forum. This would serve as a platform for me to explain my economic policies and how they would assist business people in transforming and growing their businesses,” said President John Dramani Mahama
While the forum’s official tone was non-partisan, Mahama’s public praise of Julius Debrah as the mastermind behind the initiative sparked quiet political speculation.
“If the president is highlighting Julius Debrah’s role in the Kwahu Business Forum, it could be a strategic promotion, signaling to the NDC and Ghanaians that he is a capable thinker and leader,” Dr. Tutu-Boahene, Political Marketing Consultant
The suggestion that Debrah was not just a facilitator but the brainchild behind the event adds weight to whispers of an emerging leadership role within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“If it is a promotion to let the NDC fraternity understand who Debrah is and what he stands for, then it’s good for the party. If it’s also to introduce him to Ghanaians, then it’s good for his political career,” said Dr. Tutu-Boahene
However, not all analysts agree with this line of thought. Dr. Asante Okyere, another political observer, cautions:
“In political communication, sometimes what is communicated is about 10%; that which is not communicated is about 90%. The underlying motivation isn’t that simple, it could just be the president recognizing a competent aide” said Dr. Asante Okyere
Still, he concedes that if Debrah is being projected as a business-savvy, solutions-driven leader, that in itself is a form of political signaling. “If the person is the brain behind this and can bring success, then naturally, that in itself is a form of political promotion.” Dr. Asante Okyere
Beyond the political innuendos, the Kwahu Business Forum has earned credibility as a serious economic convening. Debrah has already announced plans to expand future editions to include insurance firms and pension fund managers, creating a more robust support ecosystem for Ghanaian enterprises.
Despite its non-partisan positioning, the forum’s growing success and Debrah’s central role have led to speculation that this may be the soft launch of a broader leadership narrative. As the forum continues to gain traction, so does the intrigue around his future within Ghana’s political landscape.
