Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, has said that government would increase the daily feeding grant for beneficiaries of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) from GH₵1.50 to GH₵2.00 per child.
He said this was to improve the quality and quantity of meals provided to school children under the initiative, which supports basic education and child nutrition across the country.
This adjustment follows calls from stakeholders, including caterers and education advocates, for a review of the allocation to reflect rising food costs and ensure better nutrition for pupils.
Speaking on an X Spaces on Sunday, Dr Forson assured the Ghanaian citizens of good and healthy living.
“Currently, the government of Ghana pays GH₵1.50 per child. Today, unfortunately, we will agree that this amount is too small and it can’t even buy one egg,” he said.
He said the government intended to increase the amount to cover for at least a better meal for every child.
He said the school feeding program would be increased by 33% which means every child would be allocated GH₵2.00.
Nonetheless, Dr Forson said processes have been carried to rationalize taxes on imported materials, ensuring that all taxes or levies are accounted for.
“We have began profess to rationalize taxes because, it could be that some of the taxes are not even coming to the central bank but individual pockets,” he said.
Most of these interventions would be made clear when the budget is read tomorrow.
