The U.S. Embassy in Ghana approved 25,000 visas out of 61,000 applications in 2024, signaling a continued strong interest among Ghanaians in studying, working, and investing in the United States. The figure was disclosed by U.S. Consular General Elliot Fertik during a Consular Media Day held on May 9, 2025.
Fertik emphasized the Embassy’s ongoing commitment to transparency and efficiency in visa processing.
“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the U.S. Last year, we issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians. However, it is important to understand that those entering the U.S. must comply with our laws,” he said.
While nearly 60% of applications were rejected, Fertik did not provide specific breakdowns for the denials. However, he pointed out that common reasons often include incomplete documentation, failure to meet visa eligibility, and concerns over potential immigrant intent.
“We want to make sure Ghanaians know how to apply for visas correctly and are clear on what is expected of them during the application process,” he stated.
Fertik reaffirmed the U.S. government’s firm policy on immigration compliance.
“The U.S. has zero tolerance for illegal immigration. Those who violate the rules will face consequences, including visa refusal or an outright ban from entering the country,” he warned.
As part of efforts to improve user experience and support legitimate travelers, the Embassy is investing in streamlining the application process and enhancing transparency.
“We’ve made several improvements to ensure a smoother experience for applicants. The Department of State’s top priority is the safety of U.S. citizens abroad, as well as assisting those in need while overseas,” Fertik added.
