United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the launch of an open call for candidates to serve on the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Panel, which will comprise 40 leading experts, is tasked with delivering impartial, evidence-based assessments on the opportunities, risks, and impacts of AI. Its creation reflects growing international efforts to ensure that the technology advances global development while mitigating potential harms.
According to the UN, the initiative is designed to ensure AI “bridges divides rather than deepens them, strengthens trust across borders, and keeps humanity at the center of technological progress.”

The open call for applications is effective immediately and will remain open until October 31, 2025. Selected members are expected to represent a balance of expertise across sectors and regions, reflecting the global scope of AI adoption.
The establishment of the panel comes as governments and businesses worldwide grapple with the regulatory, ethical, and economic implications of rapid advances in AI, with calls for global coordination growing louder.
