The Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has urged employers to prioritize investment in women by implementing gender-friendly policies that not only benefit workers but also drive business growth and economic progress.
The call, made in a statement signed by the Secretary General of the TUC, Mr. Joshua Ansah, was issued in commemoration of the International Women’s Day.
The TUC pointed out that empowering women in the workplace was not only a moral obligation but also a strategic economic decision that could boost productivity, innovation, and overall business performance.

“When women thrive, Ghana thrives,” the statement maintained, reinforcing the notion that gender equality is crucial for national development. The Union noted the invaluable contributions of women across various sectors, from factory floors to corporate boardrooms, classrooms, marketplaces, and healthcare institutions, stating that their resilience and dedication form the backbone of Ghana’s economy.
While commending the government for the passage of the Affirmative Action Act 2024, the TUC reiterated the need for stronger commitment to gender equality, stating that many women still face discrimination, exploitation, and workplace violence. To address these challenges, the Union called on the government to accelerate efforts towards the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190 (C. 190) on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work. The TUC noted that 44 countries, including eight African nations, have already ratified the Convention, and Ghana should follow suit to protect women in the workforce.
Additionally, the TUC urged the government to fast-track the ratification of ILO Convention 183 on Maternity Protection. This would extend the period of maternity leave to at least 14 weeks, aligning Ghana with international labor standards and supporting working mothers.
The statement further noted that the International Women’s Day is not only a time for celebration but also for action. According to the TUC, this year’s theme, “For All Women and Girls: Right. Equality. Empowerment – The Role of Trade Unions,” serves as a strong reminder that gender equality is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. The TUC pointed out that equal access to education and employment pathways is essential for fostering an inclusive economy where women can reach their full potential.
Trade unions have historically played a critical role in advocating for decent and safe working conditions, and the TUC reaffirmed its commitment to championing women’s rights and gender empowerment. The Union pledged to continue advocating for workplace policies that foster inclusivity and economic opportunity for women, ensuring that Ghana’s workforce remains competitive and equitable.
