In a move signaling policy continuity and sectoral stability, Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that public transport fares will remain unchanged despite a recent decline in fuel prices.

Speaking to the press, Minister Nikpe explained that fare adjustments are governed by a comprehensive pricing formula jointly administered with transport unions and operators. “I am in constant touch with the unions and transport operators. We have a formula in which we use to either increase or reduce prices, and we have not gotten there yet,” he noted.
The Minister emphasized the importance of predictability and stakeholder consensus in managing fare changes, especially in a sector prone to volatility. “We are working together, and Ghanaians should be rest assured that prices will be kept for some time before any adjustments will be made,” he added.
Analysts suggest that while the decision may not offer immediate relief to consumers, it provides certainty for operators and signals a disciplined approach to economic management. It also positions the government as an arbiter of stability in an environment where inflationary pressures and fluctuating global oil prices continue to impact the transport sector.
As discussions with industry stakeholders continue, the Ministry maintains that any future fare revisions will be data-driven and timed to minimize disruptions across the public and private transport ecosystems.
