Ghana is a country blessed with fertile farmland, yet when it comes to tomatoes, the story is one of untapped potential. Tomatoes are a staple on Ghanaian tables, forming the base of stews, sauces, and everyday meals. And yet, despite their central place in the diet, local production falls short. The country still depends heavily on imports, with fresh tomatoes and tomato paste often arriving from Burkina Faso and other West African neighbours.
According to Atlas Big global production data, Ghana cultivates roughly 47,000 hectares of tomatoes but produces just 368,318 metric tonnes, an average yield of about 7,836 kilograms per hectare. Compare that with Morocco, which produces 1.3 million tonnes on only 13,875 hectares, or Poland, which harvests over 815,000 tonnes from 7,700 hectares. France pulls in more than 730,000 tonnes from 6,220 hectares, and the Netherlands, a leader in high-tech greenhouse farming, manages 880,000 tonnes on a mere 1,850 hectares.

These numbers reveal a stark truth: Ghana may have the land, but productivity lags far behind. Sure, differences in climate, access to high-yield varieties, and farming methods matter, but the gap is undeniable.
The government knows it, and it’s taking steps. Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, recently told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that the country aims to produce between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tonnes over the next two to three years, especially during the dry season. “Our yearly demand is almost 800,000 metric tonnes. And hopefully, by the end of two to three years, we should be doing about 200,000 or 300,000 metric tonnes, especially in the dry season,” he said.
The plan involves irrigation, research, and direct support for farmers. Across the country, trials are underway to test which tomato varieties perform best. At the Komadan irrigation scheme in Ashanti, at the Tono Dam in the north, and in Garu, experiments are ongoing to identify varieties that can thrive commercially. Farmers are also receiving support, including solar-powered boreholes and water pumps, to help maintain production during dry months.
Still, Mr Dumelo was careful to set realistic expectations. “If you look at how agriculture works, there are periods of research and development, and there are periods of trials. It’s going to take some time,” he explained. But he believes that, with sustained effort, Ghana could eventually stop relying on imported tomatoes. “I can assure you that if we continue as we are doing now in terms of the trials and the research and everything we are undertaking, I should think that in about five or six years we should stop the total importation of tomatoes from Burkina Faso and neighbouring countries,” he said.

The challenge is not unique to Ghana. Tomato farming is intensive, and countries that excel do so by combining small plots of land with modern techniques, high-yield varieties, and careful management. Ghana’s current yields lag far behind these global leaders, a reminder that boosting output is about innovation as much as acreage.
For now, Ghana remains a land of contradictions: plenty of farmland and high consumer demand, yet reliance on imports and underperforming yields. The government’s initiatives, if carried out effectively, offer hope that this could change. With trials in full swing and support reaching farmers, there is cautious optimism that Ghana can close the efficiency gap, reduce imports, and eventually claim self-sufficiency in a crop that touches every Ghanaian table.

Even allowing for differences in climate, soil, and farming methods, the productivity gap with countries using similar or less land is glaring.
