President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Tema and Takoradi ports will soon operate round-the-clock as part of the national 24-hour economy initiative, officially launching on July 1, 2025.
The announcement was made during the Ghana Horticulture Expo on Wednesday, June 11, where President Mahama highlighted the strategic role of logistics, exports, and agribusiness in driving economic growth.
“We are also implementing a game-changing strategy, which is the 24-hour economy, to unlock Ghana’s production potential across all sectors. I am pleased to announce that from July 1, the 24-hour Economy policy will be ready to go into operation.” President Mahama declared.
The 24-hour economy initiative aims to increase productivity, create jobs, and enhance revenue generation by promoting continuous operations in key sectors. Special emphasis has been placed on agribusiness and exports, where efficient logistics can significantly boost competitiveness.
The shift to 24/7 port operations is expected to be particularly transformative for the horticulture industry, which relies heavily on the timely movement of perishable goods such as pineapples, herbs, and vegetables.
“This policy will provide the framework for continued production, processing, and logistics in horticulture, it allows perishable goods to move swiftly from the field to international shelves, thereby minimising losses and maximising value.” President Mahama explained.
To ensure smooth implementation, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agri-business and the Ministry of Transport are collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council.
