The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has opened talks with the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) on the rollout of Akuna Wallet, a blockchain-based digital payment platform designed to promote financial inclusion and support the growth of the country’s creative economy.
In Accra, SDF Chief Executive Officer Denelle Dixon met with Minister Samuel Nartey George to discuss how the Ministry, SDF, and the Akuna Group, co-founded by actor Idris Elba, can collaborate to provide seamless global payment solutions for Ghanaian creators and entrepreneurs.
George praised the initiative and affirmed the Ministry’s readiness to support pilot testing with local content creators. He said such innovations are key to broadening financial access for young creatives and accelerating Ghana’s digital transformation.
“This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision to empower the creative economy through technology and financial inclusion. We will work closely with the Bank of Ghana and other key stakeholders to assess the system’s performance and explore opportunities for integration,” the Minister said.
Dixon explained that the Akuna Wallet, developed under the supervision of the Bank of Ghana, allows content creators and freelancers to receive international payments within seconds and convert them into Ghana cedis through a secure blockchain-based system.
She said the platform, which has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bank of Ghana, provides users with virtual U.S. bank accounts connected to global payment systems, enabling creators to receive direct payments from international companies and digital platforms.

“Akuna Wallet also integrates invoicing tools, allowing freelancers to bill clients globally and redeem payments instantly in local currency,” Dixon noted.
She added that the wallet offers virtual U.S. bank accounts, giving users the ability to monetize content on global platforms such as X, Facebook, and TikTok without depending on intermediaries like PayPal.
According to Dixon, Akuna Wallet is part of a broader ecosystem that includes Akuna Studios and Akuna Pods, and is expected to be fully launched by December 2025, following regulatory clearance.
The initiative is expected to enhance Ghana’s position as a regional hub for digital payments and creative innovation, improving access to global financial systems and empowering local entrepreneurs to participate competitively in the digital economy.
