StarOil Ghana is moving further into Ghana’s petroleum supply chain after its wholly owned subsidiary, SOL Energy Ltd, secured a provisional Bulk Import, Distribution and Export (BIDEC) licence from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
The Chief Executive Officer of StarOil, Philip Kwame Tieku, described the development as “a major milestone in our backward integration of the business,” a move that could give the company more control over how it sources and distributes petroleum products.
The BIDEC licence allows SOL Energy to operate in bulk importation, distribution and export, creating a link between StarOil’s retail network and the upstream end of the downstream supply chain. The NPA’s industry data shows that BIDEC companies play a key role in supplying petroleum products to the wider downstream market.
The licence could give StarOil greater control across its supply chain, allowing it to secure products more directly, improve supply planning and manage distribution costs more efficiently across its retail network.
That could become important as competition among Ghana’s major Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) remains intense. StarOil has already built significant scale in retail, with the company reporting a network of more than 250 stations.
The integration could also give StarOil more flexibility in serving commercial and industrial customers, while the export component creates an avenue for the company to pursue markets beyond Ghana.
For consumers, the potential benefit lies in the efficiency gains. If StarOil can achieve more predictable supply and lower procurement and distribution costs, part of those gains could translate into more competitive pricing and improved product availability.
The licence therefore gives StarOil another layer of control over its business, from bulk sourcing to distribution and finally retail. The integration gives StarOil more control over its supply chain, supports efficient operations and strengthens the company’s ability to provide reliable and competitive services to customers.
