In a move to transform healthcare access for Ghana’s retired population, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced plans to introduce nationwide telemedicine services for pensioners by the end of 2025.
The digital healthcare initiative, which will be rolled out in partnership with the Trust Hospital, aims to ensure timely medical consultations for pensioners, especially those in underserved and remote areas, without the need for long-distance travel.
SSNIT Director General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, made the announcement at the 2025 SSNIT Pensioners Engagement held in Accra.
He said for decades, SSNIT has dutifully paid pensions. But that’s no longer enough. “We are stepping into a new era, one where the dignity of our retirees is matched by innovation and care.”
The upcoming telemedicine platform will enable pensioners to consult doctors via phone and video calls. Basic healthcare services and prescriptions under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to which all SSNIT contributors are subscribed will be accessible through the platform.
Mr. Biney explained that the service will help eliminate geographic and financial barriers to healthcare for retirees.
“Many pensioners live miles from the nearest clinic. With this new system, they can speak to a doctor from the comfort of their home. It’s a lifeline,” he said.
He further revealed that SSNIT is engaging with NGOs and international health partners to expand the platform’s reach and ensure that cases requiring specialist care are catered for beyond the NHIS package.
Mr. Biney said the initiative forms part of SSNIT’s broader strategy to enhance its service offerings and improve pensioner welfare. SSNIT is also expanding its digital and physical presence through innovations like co-locating SSNIT officers at selected banks to reduce the burden of travel for pensioners.
“Digital tools now allow our staff, even at a bank near you, to access our systems and serve you just like any SSNIT branch. We’re committed to making our services more accessible, more responsive, and more human,” he said.
The Director General also disclosed that SSNIT is undertaking internal reforms to improve investment performance and ensure fair indexation rates for pensioners. The reforms are designed to safeguard the scheme’s long-term sustainability while delivering better returns for contributors.
Mr. Frank Molbila, General Manager for Benefits at SSNIT, encouraged pensioners to prioritize their physical and mental health.
“You must stay active not necessarily physically, but socially and mentally. Play games, read, learn new skills, and rest well. These small actions improve wellbeing and longevity,” he said.
He stressed the importance of regular medical checkups and encouraged pensioners to engage in activities that promote mental clarity and reduce stress.
