The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, has reported a marked improvement in employer compliance with pension contributions over the past year, expressing confidence that the positive trend will be sustained.
Addressing the media during a two-day engagement with pensioners and employers in Tamale, Mr Biney said efforts to strengthen enforcement and deepen stakeholder engagement were yielding results across both the public and private sectors.
He disclosed that, as of the end of 2025, the Minister of Finance had settled all outstanding arrears owed to government employees, a move he described as a major boost to the Trust’s operations and credibility.
According to him, the private sector has also made significant strides, now contributing 52 percent of total contributions to the scheme.
He noted that this reflects growing awareness among employers about the importance of meeting their statutory obligations.
“There has been a lot of improvement with regards to compliance. Employers are understanding that by paying for their workers, they are actually creating the environment that motivates people to give off their best,” Mr Biney said.
He emphasized that prompt payment of contributions not only safeguards workers’ retirement income but also strengthens the broader social protection system.
The Director-General described SSNIT’s active membership base of 2.1 million contributors as a powerful economic force capable of driving national development through long-term investment of pension funds.
To further enhance member benefits, Mr Biney announced plans to introduce a loyalty programme aimed at providing contributors with access to discounted services from selected providers.
The initiative is expected to cover areas such as healthcare and other essential services, offering tangible value to members beyond retirement benefits.
He reaffirmed SSNIT’s commitment to improving service delivery, deepening compliance, and building a sustainable pension scheme that secures the future of Ghanaian workers.
