Springfield Exploration and Production (E&P) is nearing the completion of its Afina-1x well appraisal drilling, positioning it to become the first Ghanaian company in the upstream oil and gas sector.
The drilling, expected to conclude by the end of November, is a critical milestone for Springfield, marking a key step in its journey to play a pivotal role in Ghana’s oil industry.
The project, located in Ghana’s offshore West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP-2) is about 7,000 kilometres from the shores of the country and 4,000 kilometres deepsea, represents a strategic partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC Explorco. This partnership also showcases a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing Ghana’s petroleum resources.

WellTest Supervisor on the Deepsea Bollsta rig, operated by Northern Ocean Limited (NOL), Willem Drogt explained that the objective is to get hydrocarbons at the surface and see how big the reservoir is for Springfield.
He assured of the crew’s commitment to meeting the timelines.
The appraisal is a vital step toward the unitisation of the Afina and Sankofa oil fields, following a court ruling in July that favored the Springfield Group’s bid for unitisation. This legal decision paves the way for the integration of these fields, expected to boost production capacity and resource management efficiency.
Springfield’s success signals a significant achievement for local content and Ghanaian participation in the upstream oil and gas sector. The company’s role as a pioneer highlights the potential for Ghanaian-led firms to contribute meaningfully to the country’s resource development.
Springfield’s progress toward becoming the first Ghanaian company in upstream operations represents a transformative moment for Ghana’s energy landscape, setting a precedent for indigenous leadership and innovation in oil exploration and production.
Upon completion, Springfield will be able to produce 50 thousand barrels of crude per day, solidifying its position as a key player in Ghana’s oil industry and boosting its international profile.
