The Parliament of Ghana has approved a budget of GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation‘s operations through December 31, 2025. However, this decision has been met with criticism from some Members of Parliament (MPs) who noted that there was no specific allocation for maintaining the nation’s sports infrastructure.
Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams revealed that the Accra Sports Stadium is slated for significant renovations following Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad.
MPs, including Dominic Nitiwul and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, expressed their concerns about the absence of dedicated funding for the upkeep of sports facilities.
Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, stressed the need for increased funding for the Ministry, stating that “we cannot leave it to the discretion of the Finance Minister or the President to say we will do it.” He urged the leadership to explore ways to reallocate funds to bolster the Sports Ministry’s capital expenditure, highlighting the Ministry’s critical role in Ghana’s sports development.
Similarly, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, advocated for a specific budget line dedicated to the maintenance of sports facilities, emphasizing the substantial investments that have already been made in this area.
