Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin ordered the Marshal to remove Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, from the House after he made comments the Speaker considered disrespectful.
The incident occurred following President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court. Speaker Bagbin requested the House to review the full composition of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report. In response, Dr. Afriyie said the Speaker should not make such comments, telling Bagbin, “I believe that as representative of Sefwi-Wiawso, it does not lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you said.”
Speaker Bagbin described Afriyie’s comment as rude and ordered him out of the House, stating, “This is a completely rude remark. I have the authority to remove you. You represent Sefwi-Wiawso, but I represent the whole country. Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not tolerate such disrespect.”
Following this, the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, apologized to Speaker Bagbin on behalf of his caucus. He said, “Speaker, we acknowledge your wisdom and leadership. What happened was unfortunate. On behalf of the entire caucus, we apologize sincerely and hope this incident is now closed.”
