Sony Group Corp. is reportedly in the early stages of creating a portable console that will allow gamers to play PlayStation 5 (PS5) games on the go. This new device aims to expand Sony’s market presence and compete directly with Nintendo’s popular Switch console, as well as potential mobile hardware from Microsoft, which is also exploring similar concepts.
The portable console builds on the PlayStation Portal, an 8-inch handheld device released in 2023 that enables users to stream PS5 games via the internet. However, unlike the Portal, which requires a stable internet connection, this new device is expected to allow for direct gameplay, making Sony’s software more accessible to a broader audience. Sources indicate that the product is still years away from launch, and there is a possibility that Sony may choose not to bring it to market at all.
Mobile gaming continues to dominate the industry, primarily driven by smartphone usage. Nintendo’s Switch has successfully carved out a niche by offering both portable and home gaming options. The anticipated release of a new Switch model in 2025 could further intensify competition in the handheld gaming market.
Historically, Sony has not released portable gaming hardware since the PS Vita and PlayStation Portable, both of which were discontinued about a decade ago. With this new initiative, Sony appears eager to re-enter the portable gaming space and capitalize on its extensive library of games.
While details regarding pricing and specifications remain unclear, the development of this handheld console reflects Sony’s broader strategy to enhance its presence in mobile and PC gaming markets.
