Online retailer Shein says it has removed all sex dolls from its global platform and suspended its adult products category, following accusations from French authorities that some third-party listings resembled minors.
France’s Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control raised concerns over the weekend, stating that the appearance and description of certain dolls suggested “a child pornography nature,” prompting public outcry and calls for immediate action.
In a statement issued Monday, Shein said it has permanently banned all seller accounts linked to “illegal or non-compliant” sex-doll products and is introducing stricter controls to prevent similar listings.
The company said it has removed every listing and associated image and is conducting a review of its marketplace oversight processes. It has also expanded its keyword blacklist to stop sellers from bypassing restrictions.
“Shein does not tolerate any form of child exploitation. These listings came from third-party sellers, but I take this personally,” said Donald Tang, Shein’s Executive Chairman. “We are tracing the source and will take swift action against those responsible.”
The incident comes as Shein prepares to open its first permanent store in Paris. France’s finance minister had warned the retailer could face a ban if such items remained available on its site. Protesters also gathered over the weekend outside the Paris location, calling for stronger oversight of online marketplaces.
Shein has previously faced scrutiny regarding environmental impacts linked to fast-fashion production and labor conditions within parts of its supply chain.
The company said the temporary suspension of its adult category will remain in place while it strengthens verification systems for marketplace sellers.
