Renowned businessman and statesman Sir Sam Jonah has urged students of Academic City University to anchor their leadership journeys in strong personal values and meaningful relationships, warning that future-ready leadership demands more than talent — it requires character and connection.
Delivering an inspiring address to students and faculty, Sir Jonah emphasized the necessity of integrity, describing it as the cornerstone of credible leadership. “Every person determined to serve and lead needs a compass that directs them. This compass is a set of non-negotiable values,” he said.
He stressed that without truthfulness and transparency, leadership collapses. “You may be tolerated for a while because of the authority you hold, but no one will truly respect or follow you if you lack integrity,” he cautioned.
Drawing on maritime tradition, Sir Jonah compared true leadership to that of a ship’s captain. “Captains are the last to leave a sinking ship. That’s not just protocol — it’s a matter of duty, accountability, and honour,” he noted, urging students to take full responsibility for those they lead. “A real leader doesn’t abandon their team when the storm hits. They stay, adapt, and lead with courage.”
Beyond values, Sir Jonah also highlighted the transformative power of relationships. “Wherever you go, be intentional about making a good impression and building relationships. Your classmate today could be your business partner tomorrow,” he said.
He cited iconic companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and YouTube — all started by peers or college friends — to show the enormous potential of peer-to-peer collaboration. “Your network is your net worth,” he reminded the students, quoting writer Porter Gale.
Sir Jonah encouraged students to build authentic, mutually beneficial relationships, share ideas, collaborate, and support each other’s growth. “Don’t just aim to be smart, aim to be the kind of person others want to build with,” he concluded.
The address formed part of an ongoing leadership development series hosted by Academic City University in Accra, aimed at shaping future-ready African leaders.
