Rektron Group Incorporated, a global infrastructure and energy firm, in partnership with Afritel Ghana Limited, has announced its intention to acquire a 60% majority equity stake in AT Ghana Limited, one of the country’s key telecommunications providers.
The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions, marks Rektron’s entry into Ghana’s telecom sector and signals a strategic move to deepen digital infrastructure and connectivity across Africa.
AT Ghana, formerly AirtelTigo, is currently wholly owned by the Government of Ghana and serves more than 2.3 million users. The company offers voice, data, mobile financial services, and business connectivity solutions. The Government of Ghana has expressed strong support for the planned acquisition, citing its potential to strengthen the national telecom infrastructure and advance the digital economy.
“We are excited to take a significant stake in AT Ghana and appreciate the support of the Government of Ghana as we take a significant stake in AT Ghana,” said Atanas Kolarov, Chief Executive Officer of Rektron. “This aligns with our global vision to advance major infrastructure initiatives, foster innovation, and deliver value to consumers throughout the region.”
Rektron’s investment will be complemented by Afritel’s local expertise. Founded by Nana Richmond Aggrey, a pioneer in Ghana’s telecom space and co-founder of Scancom Ghana (Areeba), Afritel brings strategic insight and a strong operational history to the venture.
“This partnership marks a major milestone in our mission to advance telecommunication services in Ghana,” said Aggrey. Through our strategic collaboration with Rektron, bringing global best practices, strategic investment, and next-generation infrastructure, we will strengthen our mobile network, expand nationwide coverage, and modernize service delivery. These improvements will enable us to drive down the cost of mobile data while increasing speed, reliability, and access. By making affordable, high-quality connectivity available to customers across all regions, including remote areas, we will be empowering every Ghanaian to fully participate in the digital economy and benefit from the opportunities it brings.”
The parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on May 21, 2025, outlining the framework for the acquisition. The deal is expected to support AT Ghana’s long-term growth and enhance its ability to generate stable cash flows while delivering value to stakeholders.
According to Rektron, the acquisition aligns with its broader strategy to build resilient, connection-driven ecosystems across key sectors. The rapidly growing digital market in Ghana also presents significant potential for expanded telecommunications services, digital inclusion, and mobile-based financial solutions.
The completion of the transaction is contingent on a number of conditions, including satisfactory due diligence, agreement on final terms, execution of definitive documentation, and regulatory approvals. Rektron stated it will continue to provide updates as the process advances.
If concluded, the acquisition would not only mark Rektron’s diversification into telecoms but could also reshape Ghana’s telecommunications landscape, enhancing access, affordability, and digital participation for millions.
